About this event

TAX HEAVEN by Eugenio Merino

In this situation of an emotionally burning life that is foreign to the economy and continually threatened by the slow death of being suffocated under the weight of material interests, all charisma is found at every moment of its existence, with greater intensity, as time passes. - Max Weber

Amid this triple economic, health and political crisis, the welfare state - or at least what we understood as such until the beginning of 2020 - suffers the havoc caused by a virulent, savage, and unjust neoliberal economy that is pushing it towards its death. This crisis of welfare, alongside the ineffectiveness and inability of political leaders to deal with the problem, contributes to the erection of a new definition - and later assimilation - of the state of welfare itself, where the gradual increase of deficiencies go unnoticed by the citizen.

We are immersed in a liberal economic tradition that is a staunch defender of the market as the only possible vehicle for citizen self-realization. The weak welfare state and thus human rights come forth especially at such a crucial moment as the current one where governments cannot afford the marginalization or exclusion of any individual from the system. We should not forget that an economic crisis generates the appearance of segregations –economic, political, social - which represents a risk for democracy and the political rights achieved thus far. But, how to support inclusion now when it is the system itself that excludes them? How could it be pursued when that same implemented economic model favors and engulfs the underground economy, the leakage of capital, deregulation, privatization, labor exploitation, or technological unemployment?

Eugenio Merino formulates all these questions in Tax Heaven, an exhibition where the artist focuses not only on the battered welfare state but also on a whole series of political and economic structures - mostly legitimized - that originate a direct negative impact on society. An exhibition in which Merino shakes us with his characteristic irony showing us a binomial conformed of sensory delight and death: An assortment, at first inconceivable, where a beach hammock and a funeral urn are capable of engaging in a conversation that transcends territories and Fiscal obligations.

No god. No homeland. No masters. No borders. The artist shows us an economic and financial panorama in which a set of corrective and coercive measures would no longer have the needed effect for the sustainability of the, formerly enjoyed by Europe and North America, welfare state. Eugenio Merino proposes a dignified burial for social rights, sending an invitation to cremate this dystopian scenario that was built on inequality, marginalization, and precariousness. He encourages us to celebrate a solemn funeral in honor of all the money now passed away in tax havens.
