Performance: “La Bruja” – Claudia Herrera
Overview
The Embassy of Mexico in Finland warmly invites you to enjoy a special folk dance performance by Claudia Herrera, dancer and cultural promoter of traditional Mexican arts. She will perform “La Bruja” (The Witch) — one of the most iconic dances from the state of Veracruz, Mexico.
About the dance
“La Bruja” is a traditional folk dance from Veracruz, known for its graceful footwork (zapateado) and for the remarkable balance of a lit candle placed on the dancer’s head. The dance originated as part of Mexico’s cultural syncretism — blending indigenous and European symbols — and embodies both mystery and sensuality.
Although its roots lie in the Isthmus of Oaxaca, La Bruja became widely associated with Veracruz after the group Tierra Blanca recorded the first son jarocho version in 1954. Over time, it has become one of the most celebrated and ancient pieces of the jarocho repertoire.
The lyrics, full of humor and double meanings, shift between the voices of the “witch” and her “victim,” reflecting the wit and creativity of Mexican oral tradition. The bruja (witch) is both a mythical and symbolic figure — representing feminine power, mystery, and the breaking of social conventions.
In the context of Day of the Dead
Performed during the Day of the Dead celebrations, La Bruja takes on a deeper meaning. It evokes the connection between the living and the dead, light and darkness, the real and the supernatural — themes at the heart of this Mexican tradition.
Through her interpretation, Claudia Herrera pays tribute to Mexico’s rich cultural heritage, where art, dance, and music keep memory alive and transform remembrance into a celebration of life.
