How much programming experience do I need?

Accepted Answer

Basic programming experience is recommended to get the most out of the event. Your choice of tools affects how much you actually need to type. Some tools require very little or none at all.  As long as you are ready to think and learn you are welcome to come as you are!

Do I need to make my artwork with code?

Accepted Answer

Coding is recommended, but as long as you have fun creating it, that's good! Also, artworks that run as programs in real time are preferred over video files.

Question 3

I have not programmed any visual stuff

Accepted Answer

Not a problem! You'll learn in no time how to make intriguing graphics. You will be surprised how much you can do with basic trigonometry and randomness.

Question 4

Can I do my artwork for a platform like a smart watch, gaming console or other device with a screen?

Accepted Answer

As long as it has an HDMI output, cool as a cucumber! Alternatively, you can submit a video recording.

Question 5

Can I use AI to make my entry?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but we celebrate the pain of creating. AI creates boring averages – are you using AI for a part of the demo that is in your opinion boring, like boilerplate code? We also encourage sharing tools used.

Do I need a team beforehand?

Accepted Answer

No – you can create solo, come with a team, or try finding a team at the event.

Do you accept remote entries?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but please understand that we might not have time to do troubleshooting with you in the case your entry does not run on the first try.

Can I bring a beer or two?

Accepted Answer

Not this year! Graffathon is organized in Aalto University's premises, so we have a strict no-alcohol policy. Non-alcoholic beverages are welcome.

Will  Graffathon be streamed?

Accepted Answer

The compo may be streamed, and entries will be published. Our priority is the IRL event.

Question 10

Can I sleep at the venue?

Accepted Answer

Nope, but there are many hotels in Otaniemi and Tapiola, like Noli and Radisson. Checkout Airbnb as well. If you ask around in our Telegram (link in ticket), there might also be another participant who has an empty sofa.

Is the venue wheelchair accessible?

Where can I eat/prepare my own food?

Accepted Answer

You can eat at the venue. Kitchen availability at Design Factory may be limited, will be informed during the event.

Question 13

Are kids welcome?

Accepted Answer

With a parent, absolutely! Our main concerns with minors are event photography and that everyone can get home safely in the evening.

Can I bring a desktop computer?

Accepted Answer

If you are feeling hardcore, absolutely! We don't have ethernet connections though.

Question 15

Can I get help with programming and tools during the event?

Accepted Answer

The organizers will be assisting you with making your entry - at least when they're not busy with other organizing stuff.

Question 16

Can I get a ticket even when I won't or can't participate every day? Or can I just come to watch?

Accepted Answer

Short answer: Yes.  Long answer: You are welcome to participate in the capacity that suits you and your situation. There is absolutely no requirement to be at the site all day. You can come to check the event out, listen to the talks or just come to see the end results.
