Sustainability is (in) everything. Design for Sustainability in its different scales and areas has been the driver in education and research as well as artistic and design practices at large for some time already. Examples of excellent activities are energy transition projects, textile and material innovations, just to mention two. We are looking at the power of creative practices as the change making energy towards more sustainable future.

The online talk brings together two key players in a newly started EU funded project, on the one hand academic research and on the other business. We will set the stage to uncover some of the questions on creative practices including values, skills, playfulness and engagements, with the Head of Department of Design at Aalto University, Associate professor Tuuli Mattelmäki and Hellon Design Director and Partner Zeynep Falay von Flittner.

Get to know Tuuli Mattelmäki

Associate professor Tuuli Mattelmäki is the Head of Department of Design at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Trained as an industrial designer she has applied her design expertise in enhancing creative approaches that are inspired by human experiences and everyday practices. The starting point of her research is in empathic and collaborative design and her current interests focus on the role of creative practices and service design for societal and sustainable impact.

Get to know Zeynep Falay von Flittner

Zeynep has over 15 years of international experience in service design and design leadership. She is helping public and private organisations to become more customer centric. She has worked with a wide range of international clients such as, Volkswagen, VTT, Danfoss, Bank of Ireland, Nokia and Finnish Prime minister's office. Lately she is very passionate about exploring how designers can contribute on sustainability transitions.

CreaTures stands for Creative practices for transformational futures, and is a 3-year EU funded project. Creative practices are constructive, artistic and imaginative activities that include processes of transformation. They aim to bring people together and inspire new meanings. They can also open hope through alternative ways of seeing and experiencing the possible future. In this project, along with 11 partners across Europe, we look at how to move the world towards social and ecological sustainability through addressing ways of being and lifestyles.

Hellon, a Helsinki and London based service design agency known with their slogan ‘human to human business’ is one of the partners. As part of the CreaTures project, Hellon is developing a futures sustainability game, to help different groups to co-envision new desirable futures and build path ways how to achieve them.
