Basics of Risk Communication (online course)

The European Forest Institute (EFI) is an international organisation, established by European States. EFI conducts research and provides policy support on forest-related issues, connecting knowledge to action.EFI has 30 Member Countries, and c. 130 member organizations from 42 different countries working in diverse research fields. The headquarters of the Institute are in Joensuu, Finland, and its other main offices are in Barcelona, Bonn and Brussels.

This online course aims to provide PhD students of the PyroLife Programme  a basis to become effective communicators on natural risks

Basics of Risk Communication (KD3, 1 ECTS, partners: European Forest Institute, Pau Costa Foundation, National Fire Protection Association, Arup) will provide participants a basis to become effective communicators on risks with a focus on fire disturbances. The online training covers a general framework for risk communication, conceptualization of communication strategies and maximizing their clarity, relevance, and accuracy. Participants will learn how to tailor messages and plan activities to meet the needs of various stakeholders (land managers, policy makers, general public) using best practices. Five sessions of 2h each cover the steps from an overall framework for risk communication to content creation. The sessions will provide elements of theory as well as practical exercises in small groups and will bring together some key experts in the field of risk and fire communication.
